Excellent piece on Hitler's educational policy

Many German people had suffered during the First World War and the Depression, so welcomed Hitler's economic policies with open arms. There was full employment, new public works and ordinary workers even had the opportunity to purchase a car to drive on the new //autobahns//.
Economic policy summary
Hitler's economic policy had four main ideas:
  1. Full employment - the idea that everyone should have a job. By 1939, there was virtually no unemployment in Germany.
  2. Beauty of Work - the Nazis set up the SdA (Beauty of Work) to help Germans see that work was good, and that everyone who could work should. In fact - because the Nazis had abolished the trade unions, banned strikes, and given more power to the industrialists - real wages fell and hours were longer under Hitler.
  3. Re-armament begun in 1935 - the idea of 'guns before butter'.
  4. Autarky - there was an unsuccessful attempt at making Germany self-sufficient.

The good life in Nazi Germany
Despite the loss of political and religious freedom, life improved in Germany for many ordinary people who were prepared to 'toe the line' and look the other way.

  • Everybody had a job, and a wage. To people who had been unemployed and starving, 'work and bread' was a wonderful blessing worth every civil liberty they lost.
  • The Nazis set up KdF (Strength through Joy), which gave workers rewards for their work - evening classes, theatre trips, picnics, and even free holidays.
  • The Nazis devised a scheme to allow workers to buy a Volkswagen Beetle car for a small weekly payment.
  • The autobahns improved transport and travel.
  • People appreciated the public works - eg new schools and hospitals.
  • The streets were safe and there was no crime.
  • Germany was strong and successful in world affairs.
  • Nazi rallies provided colour and fun.
  • Nazi Youth groups provided activities and holidays for young people.
  • Nazi ideology gave people hope and confidence.

How Hitler increased employment
Hitler introduced many policies to fulfil his goal of full employment:
  • He stopped paying reparations and invested the money in German companies.
  • He began a huge programme of public works including planting forests, and building hospitals and schools. He also built public buildings such as the 1936 Olympic Stadium. The construction of the autobahns created work for 80,000 men.
  • Rearmament created jobs in the armaments industry.
  • The introduction of national service meant all young men spent six months in the **//RAD//** and then they were conscripted into the army. By 1939, 1.4 million men were in the army, so they were not counted as unemployed.
  • Many Jews were sacked and their jobs given to non-Jews.
  • Many women were sacked and their jobs given to men.

Did Germany become self-sufficient?
The policy of **//autarky//** was a failure. In 1937, Göring was made Economics Minister with the job of making Germany self-sufficient in four years. However, the measures he introduced were not successful:
  • Controls were put on imports, but, if anything, imports of luxuries increased.
  • Scientists tried to make oil from coal and to find substitutes for rubber, petrol, cotton and coffee.
  • Farmers were subsidised to produce more food, and food imports were reduced.

Nazi Education
Hitler and the Nazi regime viewed education as a key component of extending the Third Reich. Therefore, education was regarded highly but also carefully designed by Nazi leaders.
All school textbooks were required to be approved by the Nazi Party before use by students. Because of the connection between the student and the teacher the Nazis sought to control the teachers. Teachers were taught the philosophy of the Nazi Party before teaching students and if that didn't sway the teachers than they were removed from teaching. By 1936, a third of all teachers were members of the Nazi Party which is very high considering it is twice as more by percentage as any other profession.
The school curriculums were carefully designed to emphasize history study and physical training. They also pushed Nazi ideals such as the glorification of the Aryans and the demonization of Jews. They taught love for Hitler with a picture of the Nazi leader in every class room and requirement of prayers for Hitler before every school meal while reducing religious teaching that was traditionally part of the German curriculum. The curriculum also taught strict obedience to the state.
The Nazis continued their strict control over education with the foundation of elite schools. These schools, run by the SS, selected students based on racial origins, physical fitness, and membership in Hitler Youth and selection was considered a great honor. The schools were designed to train the next generation of high ranking Nazi Party members and German Army officers all entirely loyal to Nazi ideals.

Hitler Youth



The Hitler Youth were formed in the 1920’s, the Hitler Youth were based off the philosophy of Hitler that the children were the future and if he influenced the children then in the long run he would have power. Until Ernst Rohms assassination in the night of long knives he led the Hitler Youth, after his death Baldur Von Shirach took control of the Hitler Youth.


In 1925 the Hitler Youth numbered 5,000. By 1933 the Hitler Youth had reached 2 million. Females in the Hitler Youth learned to be good mothers and housewives, training for hours each day in fitness so that they would bear healthy children. The males in the Hitler Youth were trained in physical fitness and not mental fitness, so that they would be able to join the army in later years. They also went through heavy propaganda and censorship of the textbooks and work that was assigned. By 1936 entry into the German Youth had become almost compulsory.


While it was a great success for Hitler, it also meant that often youth fell asleep in school or complained of tiredness because of the late night meetings for the Hitler Youth. The Hitler Youth served to keep the young people occupied in the evenings without getting into trouble, and to brainwash them with the Nazi anti Semitist views. As well as this Hitler youth who met the appropriate standards were then recruited into the SS once they were old enough.


Those that were not brought into the Hitler Youth such as Jewish people and racial minorities were often beaten and hunted by the German Youth.
